Named after the Corporation member John Washburn Bartol (1906-1952), it opened to students on their return from the holiday break. A special dinner in January commemorated the opening of the modern dining hall, which featured tours through the kitchen. The back of Bartol Hall was also connected to Alumnae Hall and could serve 500 students at a time. Located on the Residence Campus, Bartol Hall will be removed during Skanska USA Commercial Development's 'Longwood Place' project as part of a 99-year ground lease agreement with Simmons. Title A name given to the resource Beatley Library-Lefavour Hall, 1961-Current Subject The topic of the resource Beatley Library (Boston, Mass.) Lefavour Hall (Boston, Mass.) Description An account of the resource Beatley Library and Lefavour Hall (library extension) opened on October 4, 1961, after six years of planning. The Beatley Library building was planned by the School of Library Science Director, Kenneth Shaffer (1914-2006), who served at Simmons from 1946 to 1974, and was named after the College’s second president, Bancroft Beatley (1933-1955). Beatley Library and Lefavour Hall were completed for $1.8 million, with a book capacity of approximately 267,990 volumes. Beatley Library, a two-story structure on the corner of Fenway and Avenue Louis Pasteur, contained audio-visual facilities (800 films were shown to classes in 1960 alone), a small auditorium, and viewing rooms. Lefavour Hall, a five-story building on Avenue Louis Pasteur, contained the rest of the Library and the Schools of Library Science (third and fourth floors) and Publication (fifth floor). In January 2003, the College approved Master Plan II, a continuation of major renovations across campus. Projects included renovations to the Beatley Library, the Residence Campus, and classrooms, as well as addressing deferred maintenance issues. Construction of the Beatley Library began soon after the destruction of the original building in July 2004. While Lefavour Hall housed the majority of the Library, many of the amenities and collections were transferred to the new building upon its completion in 2006. Additional study rooms, computer stations, quiet study spaces, the relocation of the circulation and reference desks, and a new entrance to the Library were all part of the renovations. During the One Simmons project, Simmons renovated Lefavour Hall with a new health science center and modernized Beatley Library. In a partnership with Elkus Manfredi Architects, the firm's architects and designers worked with library staff to redesign Beatley Library. Description An account of the resource In 1909, the College purchased a property on Bellevue Street (later renamed Pilgrim Road), which included a renovated, large frame house, Bellevue House, to serve as an additional dormitory. A barn next to the house was part of the sale, finalizing the east boundary line of the College’s Residence Campus. A greenhouse was added to the Bellevue property in 1910 and hosted courses in Botany and Horticulture. During the Influenza Pandemic in 1918, Bellevue House was used as a hospital space to care for students and staff members. Bellevue House was demolished in Spring 1951 to make space for construction of Arnold Hall. Title A name given to the resource Boston Cooking School, 1903-1906 Subject The topic of the resource Boston Cooking School (Boston, Mass.) 372 Boylston Street (Boston, Mass.) Description An account of the resource Simmons completed its acquisition of the Boston Cooking School in November 1903. The agreement with the Boston Cooking School gave the College the School's funds, use of their rooms at 372 Boylston Street, and responsibility for contracts with teachers. The College agreed to offer a course equivalent to the one-year course previously offered by the Cooking School for at least three years. This course trained students to teach cooking in public schools. By the time the course was incorporated into Simmons' programs, however, such a course was not considered adequate preparation for teaching. At the end of the three years, President Lefavour, noting in his annual report that the course did not prepare students for wage-earning, suggested that the College consider dropping the course. From the Simmons course catalog, it appears that 372 Boylston Street was no longer in use by 1906. Description An account of the resource Simmons leased St. Botolph Hall for five years as the College’s first dormitory, located on Harcourt Street and No. 38 St. Botolph Street. The four-story St. Botolph Hall was renamed Simmons Hall shortly after the start of the lease. The Dean's and the House Matron's offices were on the first floor, while the upper floors were used as student dorm rooms. Simmons Hall would house 25 of the 145 students of the first class, and was the center of student life until South Hall opened on Brookline Avenue in 1905. The College held its opening reception on the morning of October 9, 1902, in Simmons Hall with the inaugural Class of 1906. The large parlor room in Simmons Hall was occasionally used for instruction sessions.
