Description An account of the resource After over a decade of student advocacy for an athletics building, construction for the Holmes Sports Center began in October 1987. Turner (East House) and Hastings (Students' House) were demolished to make way for the long-anticipated Center. The $10 million, 60,000 square-foot facility was a brief walk from Simmons' nine residence halls and Bartol Dining Hall. The Center housed a regulation basketball court, running track, swimming pool, volleyball courts, weight rooms, exercise rooms, and a dance floor. The grand opening of the Sports Center, called the Sports Center Sportstacular celebration, was held over two days in September 1989. Home matches in volleyball, tennis, hockey, and soccer were held during the celebration, along with a synchronized swim show in the evening. Kathrine Switzer, the first woman to officially run the Boston Marathon in 1967, delivered the keynote address. Highly praised by students and alumni, the Sports Center represented Simmons’ renewed commitment to athletics and physical education for undergraduates. While it was initially set aside as a common space for student activities in 1904, eight dorm rooms were added the following year. Students’ House was originally located on 86 Bellevue Street (renamed Pilgrim Road in 1913). To make way for its second permanent dormitory, North Hall, Simmons physically moved Students’ House from 86 Bellevue Street to 4 Short Street in 1906. Effective July 1, 1953, the College renamed Students’ House to Hastings House. Hastings moved from 4 Short Street to 6 Short Street circa 1965, and was converted from a dormitory into a creative arts center on the Residence Campus by 1973. It was complete with meeting rooms, a dark room, an art room, a sewing room, a music room, a chamber theatre, and a Kosher Kitchen. Hastings House was demolished to make way for the Holmes Sports Center circa 1989.
