Description An account of the resource The Park Science Center was built in 1972 as part of Simmons’ 25-year expansion plan. The Center became representative of the College's larger goals: a commitment to advancing careers in science for women; accommodation for enrollment increases; independence from the use of other colleges’ science facilities. Beginning in Spring 1972, science departments were transferred gradually to the Center. For the first time, all science programs (Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, and Psychology) were centralized in a single building, equipped with modern laboratories and classrooms. The Biology Department spanned the entire second floor, with labs, offices, and specialized research areas, including an avian room, an insect room, and a marine room. The Park Science Building was demolished in Fall 2023 to make way for the Living and Learning Center, part of the One Simmons project. Description An account of the resource The College began construction of One Palace Road, and an accompanying underground parking lot, in 2001. The new building was, in part, driven by the pressing need to integrate the Graduate School of Social Work on the Academic Campus, which had been located on 51 Commonwealth Avenue since 1945. In the 57 years the program had been based on Commonwealth Avenue, the building had never been renovated and was deteriorating. As the lack of accessibility in the classrooms and building violated the Council on Social Work Education's accreditation guidelines, the School was also at risk of losing its accreditation. One Palace Road was completed in 2002. Designed by the architectural firm Goody Clancy and Associates, the building was meant to be “representative of its period” with the use of metal and glass to achieve a modern look and feel. Traditional building materials, such as buff-colored brick and cast stone, were also intended to reinforce the building’s ties to the Peabody and Sterns MCB. The 60,000 square-foot building had four floors of academic classrooms and offices. The Graduate School of Library Science, Academic Technology, Career Resource Center, Media Center, and Counseling Center also moved to the new building along with the Graduate School of Social Work (SSW). The SSW would remain in One Palace Road until circa 2020, when it moved to Helen G. Drinan Hall (formerly named School of Management building). Description An account of the resource To make way for its second permanent dormitory, North Hall, the College physically moved Students’ House (Hastings) from No. 86 Bellevue Street to No. 4 Short Street in 1906. Construction for North Hall was completed in 1907, just before the lease of Simmons Hall expired in September. Like South Hall, North Hall was connected to the Refectory and housed up to 55 students at the time. The fifth floor of North Hall was used as an infirmary, managed by a professional nurse who lived in the building, and its basement served as sleeping quarters for male employees until 1916, when the College converted a large barn into a men's dormitory.
