Description An account of the resource During World War I, the College began leasing houses on Francis Street. In the early years, this house was initially run as a private enterprise by women who were not affiliated with the College. While students ate lunch in the MCB cafeteria, breakfast and dinner were served in the communal dining room at 36 Francis Street. By 1924, the College was using five houses on Francis Street (sophomores typically lived in these houses). With the completion of Dix and Morse Halls in 1953, the College sold the majority of its first-year student houses, including 9 Francis and 21 Francis. Description An account of the resource Construction for Evans Hall began in July 1938. The Hall was named after Maria Antoinette Evans, a widow of the former President of the United States Rubber Company. Despite having no direct ties to Simmons, Mrs. Evans bequeathed the College $100,000 for general unrestricted purposes, a gift announced in 1919. Evans Hall opened on May 25, 1939, and was the most popular dorm at the time, with larger rooms than those in the smaller dormitory houses. It provided beds for 72 upperclass students, and was the beginning of Simmons’ evolution from a commuter school to a residential college. Students often used the Evans Hall balcony as a sunning spot. Located on the Residence Campus, Evans Hall will be removed during Skanska USA Commercial Development's 'Longwood Place' project as part of a 99-year ground lease agreement with Simmons. Title A name given to the resource East House (Turner House), 1904-circa 1989 Description An account of the resource East House was included as part of the sale when the College purchased a 60,000 sq. ft. parcel of land on Brookline Avenue, Short Street, and Bellevue Street (later renamed Pilgrim Road) for $67,500 in July 1904. Effective July 1, 1953, the College renamed East House to Turner House. While Turner originally had eight rooms, but by 1953 it could house 15 to 18 students. Turner House was demolished to make way for the Sports Center circa 1989. Description An account of the resource Dix Hall was completed in 1953 and was designed by the architectural firm the Austin Company. Dix Hall could house 120 students and was named after Dorothea Lynde Dix (1802-1887), a social and medical reform activist, whose will stipulated that her $50,000 estate was to be used to help youth further their education. Before her death, she made Horatio Appleton Lamb (1850-1926), Simmons College’s first Treasurer, executor of her will. Lamb gave $30,000 to the general endowment of Simmons College and $20,000 for student scholarships, which became the Dorothea Lynde Dix Fund.
