Description
The College completed construction for its first dining hall, the Refectory, in 1905. It was connected to South Hall by a colonnade.
In late 1952, the College decided to remodel the Refectory, as it was no longer needed as a dining hall. Renamed Alumnae Hall, it served as a new student commons and auditorium. The new Bartol Hall was connected to Alumnae Hall in 1953.
On September 19, 2006, a piece of mechanical equipment caught fire in Bartol Hall’s basement. Extensive interior damage to Alumnae Hall resulted in its closure until 2008, when it reopened after renovations were completed.
Located on the Residence Campus, Alumnae Hall will be removed during Skanska USA Commercial Development's 'Longwood Place' project as part of a 99-year ground lease agreement with Simmons.
