Park Science Center, 1972-2023
Subject
Park Science Center (Boston, Mass.)
Description
The Park Science Center was built in 1972 as part of Simmons’ 25-year expansion plan.
The Center became representative of the College's larger goals: a commitment to advancing careers in science for women; accommodation for enrollment increases; independence from the use of other colleges’ science facilities. Beginning in Spring 1972, science departments were transferred gradually to the Center. For the first time, all science programs (Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, and Psychology) were centralized in a single building, equipped with modern laboratories and classrooms. The Biology Department spanned the entire second floor, with labs, offices, and specialized research areas, including an avian room, an insect room, and a marine room.
The Park Science Building was demolished in Fall 2023 to make way for the Living and Learning Center, part of the One Simmons project.
