Description
Students’ House was included as part of the sale when the College purchased a 60,000 sq. ft. parcel of land on Brookline Avenue, Short Street, and Bellevue Street (later renamed Pilgrim Road) for $67,500 in July 1904. While it was initially set aside as a common space for student activities in 1904, eight dorm rooms were added the following year.
Students’ House was originally located on 86 Bellevue Street (renamed Pilgrim Road in 1913). To make way for its second permanent dormitory, North Hall, Simmons physically moved Students’ House from 86 Bellevue Street to 4 Short Street in 1906.
Effective July 1, 1953, the College renamed Students’ House to Hastings House. Hastings moved from 4 Short Street to 6 Short Street circa 1965, and was converted from a dormitory into a creative arts center on the Residence Campus by 1973. It was complete with meeting rooms, a dark room, an art room, a sewing room, a music room, a chamber theatre, and a Kosher Kitchen.
Hastings House was demolished to make way for the Holmes Sports Center circa 1989.
