The Boston Chapter of the American Red Cross was first organized in Tremont Temple in May of 1905 as the Massachusetts branch of the American Red Cross in Washington. In 1909, the Massachusetts Branch went out of existence, leaving behind five divisions or Chapters. The Boston Metropolitan Chapter included the towns of Arlington, Belmont, Boston, Braintree, Brookline, Canton, Chelsea, Dedham, Dover, Everett, Medfield, Millis, Norwood, Revere, Sharon, Watertown, Westwood, and Woburn.
“To furnish volunteer aid to the sick and wounded of armies in time of war” is the first chapter obligation. During wartime, as well as in times of peace, the American Red Cross has provided hospital and ambulance service to disabled veterans and their families.
This collection contains a pamphlet on the history of the Boston Metropolitan Chapter of the American Red Cross, as well as Annual Reports of the chapter from 1920 - 1939, which outline the Chapter’s officers, activities, membership, and the budget for the previous year. The Annual Reports provide descriptions of the Red Cross’ main services: Home Service, Production, Disaster Relief Service, Health Service, Braille, Volunteer Motor Corps, and Junior Red Cross.
