Collection Abstract The collection consists of the Act of Incorporation of the Howard Benevolent Society, including officers, members and by-laws. There are a couple of the annual sermons and discourses delivered at their annual meeting, and a report from the Standing Committee in 1828 that has an annual report in it. The Standing Committee manages all of the operations regarding the applications, subscriptions, donations, funds and estate of the Corporation.

Organizational History

The Howard Benevolent Society was incorporated in 1818, but began in 1812 (for the first 3 years it was called the Howard-ean Benevolent Society). It was named after John Howard 1727-1790. It relieved the sick and destitute of the city proper, East and South Boston, especially the better class of American poor. Fuel, groceries, and rarely, money were given at the discretion of the Distributors. The Howard Benevolent Society was broken down into districts and further broken down into distributors.

Collection Overview

The Howard Benevolent Society's collection consists of the Act of Incorporation, that includes officers, members and by-laws. There are a couple of the annual sermons and discourses delivered at their annual meeting, which contain no annual report information but there is a report from the Standing Committee in 1828 that has an annual report in it. The Standing Committee according to the 77th annual report (1889) manages all of the operations regarding the applications, subscriptions, donations, funds and estate of the Corporation. The annual reports of the Society span 1828, 1876-1925. The reports include lists of the officers, amendments to the Act, report, historical sketch of the organization, articles and by-laws, abstract from Treasurer’s report, distributor and boundaries of districts and a list of the year’s contributors.

Missing years of annual reports: 1877, 1891, 1894-1896, 1899, 1918, 1920-1924.
