Collection Abstract |
The GSLIS collection includes annual reports,
newsletters, faculty and student files, course material, and other documents related
to the history of the library and information science program at Simmons College.
A
large part of the of the material is comprised of course material dating from the
1910s to 1998, providing a detailed survey of the School's offerings as well as a
look at the evolving content and purpose of library and information science
education in general. The Annual Reports and other publications provide an outline
of the administrative history of the program. Also of note are the faculty/staff
files, which contain biographical information about many significant figures in
library and information science education on a local, national, and in some cases
even global scale. Key individuals in the collection include five of the seven
Directors or Deans of the program, as well as professors such as Ruth Leonard and
Laura C. Colvin. The student/alumni files also include material from some of the
early graduates, such as Elizabeth Knapp, Laura Bragg, and Theodora Kimball Hubbard.

Historical Abstract |
At its inception, the Simmons College mission was to
train young women for occupations requiring technical training such as domestics,

At its inception, the Simmons College mission was to train young women for
occupations requiring "a certain intellectual maturity" and some "specialized
technical training" such as domestics, secretarial work, and library science. In a
1901 report, Dr. Henry Lefavour (soon to be Simmons' s first president) specifically
recommended a series of courses for preparation in library work. Although other
specialized schools of the College were eventually initiated, such as the School of
Nursing (1903) and the School of Social Work (1904), the idea of a School of Library
Science was developed first.(1)
In 1906, the first undergraduate degrees were awarded to 27 students. At the
beginning of 1904, the School began to offer separate graduate-level courses so
students could fulfill the one-year post-graduate academic training American Library
Association (A.L.A.) requirement. In 1949, the School initiated a formal Master's
degree program, and the undergraduate degree was dropped in 1964. Doctoral degrees
were offered starting in 1973. In light of these developments, the School of Library
Science changed its name to Graduate School of Library and Information Science
(GSLIS) in 1980.(2)
For the first forty years of the School, the student population was entirely female.
Men were not admitted until after the end of World War II. At that point the School
began to admit many students on a part-time basis and also started offering evening
classes. As the program evolved, it began to include several specializations. In
1981 the School initiated a Unified Media Specialist degree in cooperation with the
Education Department. In 1993, the School instituted a dual degree program in
library science and history with a concentration in Archives Management.(3)
In nearly one hundred years of education, the Simmons College library program has
only had seven deans and directors. When the College opened in the fall of 1902,
Mary Esther Robbins was appointed as the first director of the School. She served
in
that post until 1913 when June Richardson Donnelly took over. Donnelly had been an
instructor at the College from 1905 to 1910, left to take a post as director of
Drexel Institute Library School, and returned in 1913 when she was offered the
directorship of the Simmons' program. When Donnelly retired in 1937, she was
succeeded by Herman Henry Henkle. Henkle remained for five years, then was replaced
by Nina Caroline Brotherton in 1942. Kenneth Raymond Schaffer took the post in 1946
and remained for nearly thirty years until his retirement at the end of 1974. Robert
D. Stueart took the position in 1974, became Dean in 1975, and kept the position for
twenty years until his retirement. James Matarazzo became the Dean of the Graduate
School of Library and Information Science in 1995.(4)

The course material series is comprised of a collection of syllabi and other
papers issued in classes offered by the School. The material is organized
primarily by course number, and the bulk of the information is from the
1970s through the1990s. Some of the material, especially from the 1970s and
1980s, is undated. That material has been given circa dates. There are also
three stone tablets from ca. 2000-3000 BC which were used by June Donnelly
as part of her class on the history of books (per Ruth Leonard '28, a
library student and professor emerita of Library Science, who recalled Miss
Donnelly using the tablets in class). Accompanying descriptive material and
part of original packaging from an appraiser are also included.

There are five bound volumes of reports in this series. The reports were
compiled by GSLIS for the Massachusetts Board of Education. They describe
the training provided by the program for school media center
specialists.
The minutes include one bound volume kept by the faculty secretary from
1910-1913, and loose copies of minutes from 1969-1976. There is a
twenty-five year restriction on faculty meeting materials. Please consult
the University Archivist for more information.

These files consist of individual file on students and alumni kept by the
GSLIS administrative office from 1911-1976. The files contain correspondence
and records from periods subsequent, during and prior to enrollment as well
as some publications. Much of the correspondence is about the post-graduate
careers of Simmons students. The files include material from some of
Simmons' earliest graduates, such as Elizabeth Knapp, Laura Bragg, and
Theodora Kimball Hubbard. Of interest is the "Students - CIIs" folder (box
39, folder 40), containing a photograph of "CIIs and Specials, 1913-14" in
which the students are identified by name, and a small hand-made booklet, a
sort of yearbook, entitled "The Sioux-Tea 1920, edited by CIIs, 1920". This
booklet includes photographs, class superlatives, a class song, and names,
addresses, and jobs of the graduates. [CIIs were special students doing a
one year post graduate degree in library science.] Some material in this
series is restricted. Please consult the University Archivist for an
explanation.

The material in this series is from several conferences and summer programs
sponsored by GSLIS. The bulk of the material is from summer programs held at
the School. There are records from the 1966 National Defense Education Act
Institute which studied the skills and materials necessary in working with
gifted children. Individual student records (of participating local
children) are included, and may be restricted. Please consult the University
Archivist about using these records. Also included are materials from summer
programs on preservation organized by Professor Josephine Fang from
1978-1980, and by College Archivist and GSLIS Instructor Megan
Sniffin-Marinoff in 1987. There are also records from meetings of the
Institute for Librarians (1921-24), and a program pamphlet from a 1961
seminar entitled "Planning for Change." That seminar was held at Simmons on
behalf of the U.S. Department of State and the A.L.A. It focused on
international library issues.
