Elinor Waterman Chartrand, of Boston, Massachusetts, entered Simmons College in 1930 and graduated in 1934 with a degree in Household Economics. Her studies included History, English, Household Management, Education, Institutional Management, and the Physical Sciences. She was a member of the Simmons College Household Economics Club, Glee Club, and Dramatic Society. In September 1934, Chartrand undertook additional studies at Simmons College in Institutional Management, a one-year certificate program offered by the School of Household Economics, although she was not awarded a certificate. Chartrand taught in Boston high schools until 1938. Chartrand and her husband Gerard, who reside in New Hyde Park, NY, are the parents of two children, Louise and Roger, and grandparents to three grandchildren.(1)
The Elinor Waterman Chartrand papers contain correspondence, receipts, a diary, scrapbook and photograph albums, course notes, exercise books, examinations, class handouts, and teaching materials and manuals. The bulk of the papers, 1930-1938, document the social and academic life of a 1930's female college student and early teaching career. The diary, covering the years 1930-1934, illuminates the daily life and concerns of a college student who maintains a close relationship with her family. There is an unexplained gap in the diary from March 21, 1932 to July 20, 1932.
