Biographical Note

Ronald Wallace Cornew was Special Instructor in Mathematics at Simmons College from 1966 to 1971 and Lecturer of Mathematics from 1972 to 1973. Ronald Wallace Cornew received a B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1961, 1963, and 1967 respectively. He was also the Chairman of the Simmons College Computer Committee from 1970 to 1971. Through his participation on this Committee, the first computer terminal was set up on campus in 1970. Simmons participated in a regional time-share program facilitated by AACOMP and the Metropolitan Boston Collegiate Computer Consortium (MBCCC). Simmons (and other area colleges) cooperatively "time-shared" a Hewlett-Packard system that was networked through Babson College. Ronald Wallace Cornew also taught the first computer course at Simmons College in 1968, Seminar on Computer Programming.

Contains papers related to the Mathematics Department. They include: course materials (tests and homework assignments) for the courses Numerical Methods and Seminar on Computer Programming, returned evaluations from employees of recent Simmons math graduates, student evaluations of Ronald Wallace Cornew for the course Seminar on Computer Programming, memos (departmental, interdepartmental, and all campus), proposals for Mathematics Department Curriculum development (new math and computer courses), and a questionnaire of incoming students evaluating their present math skills.

              Contains papers relating to the activities and functions of the Simmons College Computer Committee's involvement in establishing the first computer terminal on campus and in generating campus interest in developing a regional computer network system. The records contain: BASIC and FORTRAN manuals used with the first terminal, computer printout, correspondence of the Committee (ingoing and outgoing), reports on computer activity and usage by the faculty and campus (including: a story from the Simmons College Bulletin (1969), a student paper, and a questionnaire regarding departmental use), financial records (bills, budget proposals, interdepartmental memos, purchase orders, and agreements), memorandum, meeting minutes, agendas, and handwritten notes.
