Historical Abstract |
Eva Whiting White (1885-1974) was a pioneer in the field of social work. White was
the first woman to graduate from the Boston School for Social Workers (later: Simmons
College School of Social Work) in 1907. She went on to become the Headworker at the
Elizabeth Peabody House, a settlement house in Boston's West End; Dean of the Simmons
College School of Social Work; a member of the Boston Board of Public Welfare; Director
of the Americanization and Immigration Division of the Massachusetts Board of Education;
and President of the Women's Educational and Industrial Union. |

Custodial History
Mrs. White contributed some of her professional papers to the Schlesinger Library
at Radcliffe College in 1965. At her death, September 25, 1974, her remaining papers
were included in her estate, administered by Joseph T. Sullivan, Trust Officer of
the Newton-Waltham bank. Mr. Sullivan contacted Dean Robert Rutherford in October
1974, and the papers were given to the Simmons College Archives on July 18, 1975.
Eva Whiting White made no provision in her will for the transfer of literary rights.
In addition, according to a note found in the Archives control file, in the fall of
1968, White delivered a "notebook" and a "box of Archives" to Stiena Benson, Librarian
of the Simmons College School of Social Work Library. It is assumed that this material
was incorporated into the material White left to Simmons in her will. Just which part
of the collection constitutes this notebook and box of archives, however, is unclear.

Processing Information
Processed by Simmons Archives staff

This collection guide was encoded as part of the LEADS project by Danielle Geller,
August 2013
This collection has been processed three times. During the second processing, no record
was written to explain the arrangement. Unfortunately, when White's papers were transferred
to the archives, some papers were removed from their original folders to facilitate
packing. The Simmons Archives staff attempted to restore original order whenever possible,
and loose items were placed in folders related to the subject of the items. The bulk
of the material in the collection was contained in scrapbooks; however, they were
completely dismantled and could not be reconstructed. The second processor also incorporated
material from twenty-five folders into other existing folders and discarded materials
without documentation.
Eva Whiting White was born in Webster, Massachusetts on August 5, 1885 to Frederick
Herbert and Marie Emma (LeRoy) Whiting. On April 2, 1902, she married Wesley Dunn
Allen White, but shortly after their marriage, he died unexpectedly. In 1907, White
was the first woman to graduate from the Boston School for Social Workers (later known
as the Simmons College School of Social Work). She pursued graduate studies in social
work at the University of Wisconsin and Columbia University.
In 1909, White began her career as the Headworker of the Elizabeth Peabody House,
a settlement house in Boston's West End, and remained there until 1944. White also
contributed to the education of social workers as a non-resident lecturer at Bryn
Mawr College between 1917 and 1929. In 1922, White became a professor of social economy
at Simmons College, and she directed the Simmons College School of Social Work from
1922-1929. White continued teaching courses at Simmons until 1950.
White was associated with numerous social welfare and civic organizations concerned
with housing, education, and immigration. White served as a member of the Boston Board
of Public Welfare, 1925-1947; as the Director of the Americanization and Immigration
Division of the Massachusetts Board of Education, 1927-1950; and as the President
of the Women's Educational and Industrial Union of Boston, 1929-1952. White retired
from public life in 1953.
The Eva Whiting White papers, 1904-1974, contain correspondence, pamphlets, newspaper
clippings, and photographs documenting her professional career in social work. The
bulk of the material reflects White's time as the Headworker at the Elizabeth Peabody
House, a settlement house and community center in Boston's West End, which organized
educational and recreational programs for the children of Greater Boston's immigrant
community. Other materials relate to White's professional activities and affiliations,
such as the Boston Board of Public Welfare, the Division of the Immigration and Americanization
of the Massachusetts Board of Education, and the Women's Educational and Industrial
Union.
This collection also contains some material related to White's time teaching in the
Simmons College School of Social Work, but this material is limited to notes and course
outlines.
Very little personal information about White is documented in this collection. White's
personal papers include family genealogies, financial records, post cards, and newspaper
clippings. The archives also acquired two handwritten diaries dated from 1915-1919
and 1925-1929.

This series contains the bulk of the collection and is divided into three subseries:
General Materials, Elizabeth Peabody House, and Simmons College School of Social Work.
This subseries consists of correspondence, clippings, pamphlets, programs, articles,
and speeches that relate to Eva Whiting White's affiliations with social welfare and
civic organizations throughout Boston. An extensive correspondence index has been
compiled, and correspondents are arranged and listed alphabetically. Letters from
unidentified correspondents are found at the end of the alphabetical arrangement.
Significant correspondents include Jane Addams, Harriett M. Bartlett, Bancroft Beatley,
Leonard Bernstein, Alice Channing, Eleanor Clifton, Ada Comstock, Richard K. Conant,
James Michael Curley, Cardinal Richard Cushing, Edward A. Filene, Katharine Hardwick,
William J. Holmes, Joseph Lee, Henry Lefavour, William E. Park, William Pear, Robert
Rutherford, Leverett Saltonstall, and Maida Solomon.
White's affiliations include the Boston Board of Public Welfare, the Division of the
Immigration and Americanization of the Massachusetts Board of Education, and the Women's
Educational and Industrial Union. As the President of the Women's Educational and
Industrial Union, White collected significant materials documenting the organization's
activities, such as histories, brochures, and newspaper clippings. White also collected
materials related to the Boston Tercentenary Committee, which celebrated Boston's
300th anniversary in 1930; materials include pageant scripts and drawings, programs,
publications, and clippings. The affiliation materials are arranged alphabetically,
except in the case of the Greater Boston Committee on Displaced Persons and the Greater
Boston Federation of Neighborhood Houses, both of which are filed under "Boston,"
and the Division of Immigration and Americanization, which is filed under "Immigration."
The subseries contain a small number of complete and incomplete articles and speeches
that date from the 1930s and 1940s. These materials are arranged chronologically.
Pamphlets documenting local charities, community programs, settlement houses, and
political activities are arranged alphabetically by subject. The majority of the pamphlets
relate to social work and local social welfare programs. Newspaper clippings, the
bulk of which date from 1915 through 1974, are arranged in broad subject categories.
The bulk of the clippings relate to social work and White's activities and accomplishments.
No attempt was made to put the clippings into chronological order.
