Collection Abstract | The Daisie Miller Helyar papers consist of one scrapbook which documents Helyar's undergraduate education at Simmons College between 1906 and 1910. Items in the collection include her admittance letter to Simmons College, class schedules, report cards, post cards, photographs, letters, ticket stubs, wedding invitations, dance cards, programs, and souvenirs. Photographs document Helyar's life at Simmons and at home, and include portraits, candids of college friends, camping trips, and outdoor scenery of Vermont and Boston. There is also some material from Daisie Helyar's visits to the University of Vermont. |
Historical Abstract | Daisie Miller Helyar was born in West Brattleboro, Vermont in 1880. She entered Simmons College in 1906 and participated in the Glee Club and basketball before graduating with a B.S. in Library Science in 1910. As a professional, Daisie Miller Helyar worked at the Walpole Public Library, the Williams College Library, and the North Bennet Street Industrial School. Following her retirement, Daisie Miller Helyar set up the West Brattleboro branch of the Brattleboro Public Library, where she served as librarian until 1968. Daisie Miller Helyar passed away on October 28, 1976. |

Daisie Miller Helyar was born in West Brattleboro, Vermont in 1880 to Helen S. Miller. She attended Brattleboro High School and was admitted to Simmons College in 1906. As a student she participated in the Glee Club and basketball. Helyar graduated from Simmons in 1910 with a B.S. in Library Science. She married John Putnam Helyar on August 14, 1912. Helyar had four children, John (born 1913), Richard C., Marshall Gould (born 1918), and Ruth (born 1919). In 1911, she held a temporary position in the Children's Department of the Walpole Public Library and later that same year she took a position as an assistant at the Williams College Library. In 1912 she worked as an assistant of the North Bennet Street Industrial School in Boston. For several years after 1916 the Helyars resided in New Brunswick, New Jersey, but by 1925 Helyar was again living in her hometown of Brattleboro, Vermont. In 1952, following her retirement, Helyar set up the West Brattleboro branch of Brattleboro Public Library, as a town and academic school library. Helyar served as the librarian in West Brattleboro until 1968. Her husband died in 1956, and Helyar died on October 28, 1976.

Several dance cards, invitations, and souvenirs record specific college events including holiday and class dances during the years 1907-1909. There is also material from Daisie Helyar's visits to the University of Vermont, including their 1909 Senior Prom, Commencement, and Alpha Zeta Fraternity activities. The many photographs in the scrapbook document both Helyar's college and home life. The photographs include portraits, candids of college friends, camping trips, and outdoor scenery of Vermont and Boston. There are many programs from various theater performances and church services that she attended. Another item of interest is a pamphlet entitled, "Souvenir View Book of the Chelsea Ruins: The Burning of Chelsea - Sunday....April 12, 1908 (p. 24)."
