Historical Abstract | Geneva Alice Daland (1896 -?) received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Household Economics from Simmons College in 1918. While at Simmons, Daland participated in Track her first two years, YWCA Census Committee her third year, and the YWCA Missionary Committee her last year. After graduating Daland worked for the Cancer Commission of Harvard University and Huntington Hospital. She briefly taught at Northeastern University and at the New England Deaconess Hospital. Daland taught at the Thorndike Memorial Hospital Laboratory for 33 years before retiring in 1961. She served as the president of Simmons College Class of 1918 from 1973-1986. |

Geneva Alice Daland (1896 -?) of Wakefield, Massachusetts received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Household Economics from Simmons College in 1918. While at Simmons, Daland participated in Track her first two years, the YWCA Census Committee her third year, and the YWCA Missionary Committee her final year. According to fellow students, Daland was always busy and deeply serious, spending most of her time in the Biology Lab.(1)
After graduating from Simmons in 1918, Daland worked for the Cancer Commission of Harvard University and Huntington Hospital. Daland taught at Northeastern University for 6 months before teaching hematology at New England Deaconess Hospital for two years. Daland went on to a 33 year career at the Thorndike Memorial Laboratory where she worked as a technologist focusing on hematology. She retired in 1961.
During her career Daland published the Atlas of Morphologic Hematology in 1951, and co-wrote a genealogy of the Mansfield Family. She also wrote numerous reports, studies, and articles in the field of hematology.
Daland was also an extensive traveler, visiting Europe and traveling the United States. She had many hobbies, including photography, arts and crafts, gardening, and genealogy. She was a member of the Zonta Club of Boston, the Business and Professional Woman’s Club of Boston, and the Appalachian Mountain Club. In 1973 she became the president of Simmons College Class of 1918 and served in this capacity until 1986.
Daland never married. After her retirement, she lived with her disabled sister in Wakefield, Massachusetts.

The collection consists of two scrapbooks, two slides, two negatives, and a textbook entitled A Laboratory Course in Physiology. The two scrapbooks include photographs, clippings, and pamphlets detailing life as an undergraduate at Simmons College between 1914 and 1918, and as an alumnae officer of Simmons College Class of 1918. The two slides and negatives are identical, one is of Daland’s yearbook photo, and the other is a commencement photo of Daland in her cap and gown. The textbook was used by Daland in her Physiology Course at Simmons, which was taught by Dr. Howard Hamlin during the years 1915-1916.
