Leonard Soltzberg, born in 1944, was a faculty member at Simmons College
between 1969 and his retirement in 2009. He received his B.S. in 1965 from the University
of Delaware, majoring in Chemistry and Mathematics. He earned his M.A. in 1967 and
his Ph.D in Physical Chemistry in 1968 from Brandeis University. After completing
his graduate education he became a research associate, joining the Nuclear Regulatory
Commission (NRC) Postdoctoral Association in 1969.(1)
While working with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, a government agency, Professor
Soltzberg found that he became very involved in the minutiae of research and feared
becoming too highly specialized. In order to regain his view of the field at large,
Soltzberg decided to pursue teaching, saying that it would give him the opportunity
to keep in touch with the types of concepts that were most important to him.(2)
Professor Soltzberg, now Professor Emeritus, has held several positions during his
tenure at Simmons. He is best known on campus in his job as a Chemistry instructor,
where he works with students on specialized topics such as Crystallography and the
solid states of matter.(3) In his own research, Professor Soltzberg’s main fields
of interest are Mass Spectrometric Analysis and Computers in Chemistry. His desire
to help others learn about computers on an informal basis also led him to serving
as both the Coordinator of Academic Computers and the Director of Computer Services
when Simmons opened its first computer labs.(4)
