Description

PURPOSE: The purpose of this systematic review was to investigate how gender identity influences opportunities for women in sport coaching.

METHODS: 12 articles gathered from the Simmons University online Library Collection satisfied the review’s inclusion criteria. Key terms used in the initial search included gender, coaching, sport, inequality, and women coach. Further criteria for inclusion were full-text format, peer reviewed, publishing date of 2016-2019 and in the English language. The 12 pieces underwent content analysis from which the author determined common themes. RESULTS: 9 countries were represented by the reviewed research. A total of 587 individuals, of which 319 were identified as female and 193 as male, ranging in age from 17-81 years and 4 textbooks constituted the collective sample population. 8 categories of recurrent themes and vocabulary regarding the role of gender in sport coaching were determined. The themes of ‘stereotypes, norms, expectations,’ ‘homologous reproduction,’ and ‘insiders, outsiders, others’ were most prevalent.

CONCLUSION: Prejudiced expectations for behavior and competence on the basis of gender and the reproduction of homogenous workplace environments disadvantages some women in the sport coaching profession by limiting the potential for career advancement. The findings demonstrate the need to increase support for women athletic coaching settings.
