Traditions at Simmons Today
Over 100 years after our first class arrived on campus, Simmons University traditions are still an important aspect of student life and are part of what makes Simmons so special. While they have changed and evolved over the years, there are still a few familiar traditions that have lasted the test of time. Below are some of the traditions celebrated at Simmons today.
May Day
Simmons’ longest-running tradition, modern May Day celebrations still see the sophomore class hosting the event in honor of the senior class. Activities include flower crown making, a strawberry-themed brunch, singing, the maypole dance, and speeches.
Winter Wonderland
Hosted by the freshman class, this banquet puts students in the holiday spirit with res-hall decorating, themed dinners, and an ugly sweater party. This tradition loosely grew from the Olde English Dinner.
Simmons Soiree
This is a formal dance, where Simmons students and their dates spend the night dancing at one of Boston’s finest hot spots like Boston Park Plaza, the State Room, or the Fairmont Copley Plaza.
Shark Week
Named for the Simmons mascot (the Sharks), this weeklong event includes activities like casino night, scavenger hunts, laser tag, cake decorating, and more. This tradition is all about celebrating Simmons with school spirit and Shark pride.
Founder’s Day
Every October 30th, Simmons students celebrate the birthday of Simmons University founder John Simmons with an essay contest, sparkling apple cider, and cake.
Friends and Family Weekend
Evolving from Father-Daughter and Mother-Daughter Weekends, every year friends and families of Simmons students head to campus to experience Simmons for themselves.
