Founded in 1904 as the Boston School for Social Workers, the Simmons School of Social Work (SSW) established the first academically-affiliated social work program in the United States, setting a precedent for professional education in the field.

Rooted in a commitment to social justice, SSW has continually evolved to meet the changing needs of society—expanding its curriculum, pioneering fieldwork opportunities, and fostering diversity and inclusion. From shaping early medical and psychiatric social work to embracing digital learning and behavioral health research, SSW remains a leader in preparing compassionate, skilled professionals dedicated to transformative change.

This exhibit explores the milestones, challenges, and enduring impact of SSW over more than a century.

This digital exhibit was researched and created by Kelsey M. Kolbet, Simmons University Archivist, in 2025.
