Students celebrating Track Day (1920s)

Track Day

Track Day was first established on 1911. The events were selected based on the number of students that attended the practice events during the school year. Inlcuded in the events were shot-put, high jump, javelin throw, standing broad jump, discus throw, hop-step & jump, basketball throw, archery, tennis rounds and, for a time, horseback riding. Track Day was renamed "Field Day" in the 1940s and is a tradition that is practiced to this day.

Individuals and classes could win award cups for each of the events. These cups were presented to the classes that received the most points overall and to the individuals earning the most points in each event. Other competitions, such as tug-of-war, fashion show, and auction were added in later years.

Faculty-Student Games

Alongside Track Day, the faculty-student baseball game was first organized in 1922. The students gave uniforms that consisted of skirts, pantaloons, and clown trousers to faculty members. Despite the faculty losing the first game 3-2, the match continued every year for some time and included prominent faculty such as President Bancroft Beatley. Additionally, students played other sports with faculty like field hockey, football, and ping-pong.
